A/R: Vodafone Ghana Foundation Instates Computer Lab With Free Internet Service To Ashanti Regional Library
‘’Vodafone believes in technology, education, and digitalization and when we lay our hands on someone that can make that happen why not’’.
This is what the Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Mrs Patricia Bonah said when ‘’Vodafone Ghana Foundation handover a commuter lab with free internet service to the Ashanti Regional Library sited on the premise of the Centre for National Culture in the Greater Kumasi on Thursday 15th 2023.
Speaking in a follow up interview, Mrs Patricia Bonah revealed that the gesture is to help provide a platform that will enhance teaching and learning through Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
’’As we believe in technology, we deem it a privilege to provide devices and internet access to the general public especially school-going children to cushion them in their quest of conducting research’’.
She averred that the Ashanti regional library ICT lab is the 9th computer science laboratory in the 9 regional capitals Vodafone Ghana Foundation has established in collaboration with the Ghana Library Authority.
On her part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA), Mr. Hayford Siaw, lauds Vodafone Ghana Foundation for the kind gestures stressed that, the Ghana Library Authority have made significant impact following government policies of which 400,000 people are now using the library.
That notwithstanding the number of libraries have also increased from 61 to 118 with 1.5 million books in stock.
Speaking to the media, he reveals that the outfit has projected 1.7 million people to visit the library by the end of the year 2023.
‘’E-Learning, Ghana Library APP’’
Adding, the authority has created digital library App to make reading convenient for the public and students at home and school where the APP can be download using the Google Play Store. So far, 100,000 people have already register and using the App.
He explained further that the era of no books in our libraries is over because, they have in stock new books on the App and he believes the collaboration with Vodafone will improve learning among students and urged other institutions to help create an enabling environment for digital learning using the internet.
The Ghana Library APP, initiated by the authority will compel children to adopt electronic learning and at the same time build their academic performance.
Mr Siaw emphasized that it wasn’t on merit that the Ghana Library Authority is recognized globally as the ‘Library of the Year’ at the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards 2021…but due to its outstanding commitment in using technology to support remote learning and promote information skills, literacy, and reading.
He stressed on few setbacks noted, the region is blessed with mobile library van, but the cost of fueling remains a huge task confronting the authority and call for support.
