Family Mounting Pressure On A/R Police Command To Investigate Death Of Ernest Kofi Acheampong In Police Cells At Jachie (Contact)
The family of Nyinasinase -Aduana is calling on the Ghana Police especially the Ashanti Regional Police Command to investigate the circumstance that led to the untimely death of Ernest Kofi Acheampong.
The Abusuapanin Yaw Fosu and the surviving spouse- Abigail Acheampong, and the entire family of Ernest Kofi Acheampong (deceased) who died on 7th March, 2023 at the Jachie Police Station in the Bosomtwe District in the Ashanti region of the Republic of Ghana under some bizarre circumstances in Police Custody, to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the untimely death of Ernest Kofi Acheampong.
In a press briefing, the Abusuapanin Yaw Fosu, the uncle to the deceased, on the 4th March, 2023 had a call that his nephew has been arrested and brought to the Jachie Police Station, upon reaching the Police station he was informed that his nephew has stolen somebody’s mobile phone and for that matter he has been charged of the offense of Stealing.
According to him, a certain police officer who is not stationed at the Jachie police station but lives at Jachie Township personally arrested the deceased person when he (Police Officer) met the deceased in a trotro bus enroute to Kumasi Kejetia and brought him to Jachie police station for detention, where he subjected the deceased to physical abuse that he became weak.
Abusuapanin Yaw noted that at the police station, he requested to see his Nephew (Ernest Kofi Acheampong) but the Officer in charge refused him and a further plea for bail too denied with the excuse that the Inspector-in-charge of the case was not available at that moment.
Stressing further, on 6th March, 2023, he visited the police station and had a meeting with one Krah, the said Inspector-In-Charge of the case and upon several deliberations to allow him see his nephew but he was denied and further informed him that his nephew would be arraigned before Court despite scantiness of the evidence, the Police at Jachie decided to keep the deceased in custody.
According to Abusuapanin, on the previous day, food was sent for the deceased but the deceased was denied access to the food. That, on 7th March, 2023 he had a call from the Jachie Police station inviting him over to the station which he went and to his surprise saw his nephew lifeless purported to have hanged himself with the robe from a blanket in the police cell.
A careful examination at the police cell where the deceased was kept did not show any signs that the deceased died by hanging.
Through this painful death of Ernest Kofi Acheampong, the deceased pregnant wife, the family and other sympathizers demanded answers from the Jachie police the cause of death of their beloved Ernest Acheampong but unfortunately, they were told series of conflicting evidence; that he used cell bucket as a table to reach top of the window; that he cut portion of the blanket as a rope and hanged himself.
Following these uncertain information about the death of Ernest Acheampong, the family believe that the (deceased) was beaten or abused to death by the Jachie Police officers because ordinarily arresting and detaining a healthy accused person cannot caused his/her death. We pray that the necessary investigation is conducted to unravel the circumstances leading to the death of the deceased person and those responsible for the untimely death of Ernest Acheampong.
As we speak, the body of the deceased was removed by the police and deposited at St. Michael Hospital Mortuary, Pramso for preservation and autopsy accordingly.
The body of the deceased Ernest Kofi Acheampong was identified to the Pathologist Prof. Dr. Osei Sampene in witness by Abusuapanin Yaw Fosu, D/Pro./Inspr. Vivian Agbelengor and Inspr. Jacob Tetteh. Per the autopsy report it was reviewed as follows;
CAUSE OF DEATH ACCORDING TO THE PATHOLOGIST
Cerebral hypoxia
Cerebral edema and herniation
Strangulation by hanging (Unnatural). Kindly find the attached document for your necessary consideration.
The basis for the alleged hanging of the deceased is unknown and neither has there been any reasonable explanation by the Jachie Police.
Through these core reasons, the family and the surviving pregnant earlier petition the Ghana Police Service, but we have not head from them and we want to once again remind them through the media to constitute swift measures that will help them unravel the untimely death of Ernest Kofi Acheampong (deceased).
