Queens’ Girls SHS Celebrates 10th Anniversary With A Call On Gov’t To Support School With Infrastructure
The Queens’ Girls Senior High School has celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a call on the government through the Ministry of Education to come to the aid of the school to enhance its infrastructural deficit.
Speaking during the colourful event, the brain-child of the school, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyabi II told the and sundry that his prime objective of establishing Queens’ Girls School was to provide a platform for girl-child education to be empowered, and that ambitious agenda has been achieved.
Expressing his gratitude to the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his effort in shaping the school to stand tall among girls’ senior high schools in the country is an honour done by him.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyabi II, double as the paramount chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Council, president of the Western North Regional House of Chiefs and current president of the National House of Chiefs, averred that Queens’ Girls has chalked success academically despite the insufficient infrastructure and learning materials, the school produced intellectuals and academia’s who are now in some key tertiary institution signifies how progressive Queens’ Gilrs has become in its 10 years of existence.
According to him, the mixed schools have seen a significant increase in enrollment than the girl’s institutions.
However, the journey to achieve this agenda did not come on a silver platter but through hard work, commitment and dedication to service by the first headmistress and both teaching and non-teaching staff.
Despite the few challenges during the time, the school did not give up on its commitment to keep academic work in progress.
“Today, Queens’ Girls SHS has been absorbed by the Ghana Education Service”…and the school is benefiting from the Free Senior High School Policy. This milestone, calls for celebrations and stock-taking.
Having realized the contribution of the Municipal Chief Executive, he noted that, a 6-unit classroom block has been constructed for the school, but was quick to remind the president that the school need pick-up vehicles to enhance administrative work.
Ogyeahoho Yaw II used the occasion to appeal to individuals, corporate bodies and other philanthropists to come to the aid of the school.
Cutting the cake of the 10th anniversary, the theme; “A DECADE OF IMPACFUL GIRL CHILD EDUCATION IN THE WESTERN NORTH REGION”, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo told the gathering that, Queens’ Girls SHS is blessed to have him for the second time on their premises because Queens is the first school he visited twice since he became president in the country.
Speaking on government commitment in the education sector stressed that his prime objective is to ensure every child has access to quality and free education and such a goal has been achieved.
Investing in girl child education is a core mandate for every country however, educating girls is social education policy and education is the key to the human development of our nation and the government considers education as an instrumental sector.
After taking office, despite the mockery and the propaganda, his government has seen a significant enrollment of 1.6 million students, quite impressive numbers in his administration and the history of Ghana.
However, the government continues to intensify education needs of which 20 STEEM Centres and others have been completed and Queens’ is the only blessed school to have been considered with an Astroturf facility…these facilities will enhance teaching and learning and he will ensure the school got an equal share of the national cake.’’ To educate a child is to educate a community’’.
Additionally, the headmistress, of the school, Madam Evelyn Doris Acquah said Queens’ Girls SHS started with five students which later grow to 64 in number and now the student population have grown significantly.
According to her, the contribution of women to national development cannot be underestimated…however, Queens is aiming at gracing higher highest to promote girl-child education.
Despite the internal efforts to provide for students’ needs, she appeals to the government to resource the school with textbooks, internet service and many others that the school needs to promote quality teaching and learning.
In conclusion, the school prefect, Ms Victoria Kessewaa also acknowledged the contributions of the administrators for ensuring that Queens’ started with a humble beginning and has developed into a beacon of academic excellence through hard work of endurance from the teaching and non-teaching staff.
Citing challenges confronting academic work; mentioned infrastructure development like; science labs, dormitories, classrooms and many others, appealed to the government through the Ministry of Education to come to the school’s aid.
She used the opportunity to advise colleague students to take their studies seriously to become successful in their academic performance.
