NPP Disowns COP Alex Mensah As Member Of The Party
The Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Richard Ahiagbah has rebuffed suggestions that COP George Alex Mensah (rtd), who has admitted to being sympathetic to the cause of the NPP, was allegedly plotting to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the sake of the NPP.
Mr Ahiagbah, speaking on TV 3’s The Keypoints programme Saturday, September 16, 2023, noted that COP Alex Mensah’s involvement in an alleged plot to oust IGP, contained in the leaked tape, so he could succeed him cannot be construed to be in the interest of the NPP, stressing that it was merely a personal ambition of his which had no connection whatsoever with the NPP as a political party.
“What is happening is clearly an individual’s ambition to advance his interest. It has nothing to do with the NPP or the government. It is a certain COP’s ambition to be IGP. And appears to be saying things to advance that interest because of Bugri Naabu’s proclivity to the President. So that’s how this matter should be seen,” he explained.
The leaked tape, which is the subject of probe by a parliamentary ad-hoc committee, contains a recording of three senior police officers in discussion with the former Regional Chairman of the NPP on how to oust the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare. The discussion lamented how the IGP will not help the NPP to win the upcoming 2024 General Elections among others.
Even though COP Alex Mensah has admitted that he is a sympathiser of the NPP due to his family background, the NPP through its Director of Communications, has emphasized that he was not seeking to be IGP because of the NPP.
