Over 3 Million Direct And Indirect Jobs Created Through Small Scale Mining-Minerals Commission CEO Hinted
The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr Martin Kwaku Ayisi has revealed that over 3 million direct and indirect jobs have been created through Small Scale Mining in all the mining regions in the country.
According to Mr Martin Kwaku Ayisi, small-scale mining activities have created huge employment opportunities for the good people of this country, and the problem confronting the ooutfit is the availability of concessions for miners to embark on responsible small-scale mining.
Mr. Martin Kwaku Ayisi made this known on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem Morning Show program on Thursday 9th August 2024 with an exclusive interview with Abena Pokua Anwhenie.
He disclosed that, government through the Minerals Commission has resourced the Geological Service Department to search and explore idle lands for small-scale mining activities.
That notwithstanding, the Minerals Commission was created in the year 1986 with only 5 regions with, Mr Kofi Ansah as the Chief Executive Officer who is still surviving and working so assiduously to make the Minerals Commission more sustainable.
“The sector has created direct and indirect jobs and most of the working class are female ( women ) in the mining sector”.
Mr Martin Ayisi further bemoaned and expressed concerns about the alarming rate at which illegal mining ( Galamsey) activities is polluting most of the country’s river and water bodies.
He was emphatic that, tax generated from gold production in the country have contributed significantly in Ghana’s GDP growth.
In another development, Mr. Martin Kwaku Ayisi noted that, Ghana opened its maiden commercial gold refinery in Accra, on Friday 9th August 2024. Which form part of effort by Africa’s leading gold producer to add value and earn more from the precious metal ( gold) which has been mined over centuries.
The Royal Gold Refinery with a capacity to process 400 kilogrammes ( kg ) of gold per day will source gold dore from small-scale and artisanal miners before acquiring licences to process gold from large-scale miners.
The Royal Gold refinery, was inaugurated by His Excellency the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia with ultimate objective to form a partnership between Rosy Royal Minerals of India and Ghana’s Central Bank with a 20% stake.
