Despite several efforts made by the Government, Traditional Authorities, Civil Society Organisations ( CSO’s) and the Media to collaborate in fighting Illegal Mining ( Galamsey ) activities in the country, the menace has still been alarming.
Deployment of armed military personnel to most Galamsey sites in the country has not yielded successful even though earth moving mining equipment such as excavators, chanfang etc were set into fire and arrest were also made by the armed military task force in order to put fear and prevent illegal miners from operating.
Many Ghanaians wonders why these illegal miners operates with impunity and without fear.
The tax payers monies which were used to cater for the deployment of the armed military task force most Ghanaians think has gone wasted after not succeeding in the Galamsey fight.
A team of journalists stormed Sefwi Maanse , in the Bibiani Anwhiaso Bekwai municipality of the western north region where illegal miners both Ghanaians and foreigners are causing destruction within a forest reserve with a number of excavators without fear of being arrested by the security agencies.
The illegal mining activities in the community is so alarming that the river bodies that passes through the area have been polluted and destruction of the environment.
One may wonder how these earth moving equipment ( excavators ) manoeuvred to find its way to the community to operate.
Similar development is also alarming at Sefwi Aboabo in the same Bibiani Anwhiaso Bekwai municipality where the activities of these illegal miners have polluted the Ankobra river that passes through the area putting a very serious threat to human health because most of the residents used the river for their household chores and farmers mostly relied on it as their source of drinking water.
The team of journalists who visited these communities after interactions with the residents blamed the authorities of the Bibiani Anwhiaso Bekwai municipal assembly headed by Mr Paul Andoh for not doing his work well as the Chairman for the Municipal Security Chairman because how come the municipal assembly still exist and the authorities still pretend as if they are not aware of the Galamsey activities going on in most communities within the municipality?
The residents further hinted that the illegal miners claim they have gone to see the authorities of the municipal assembly before carrying out with their operational activities so it is difficult for any member or resident in these mining communities to prevent them from carrying out their operational activities.
The residents revealed further that the traditional authorities in the Bibiani Anwhiaso Bekwai municipality have also made several efforts to get the activities of the Galamseyers come to a halt through their Paramount chief who is also the President of the National House of Chiefs , His Royal Highness Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II , who has also threatened to destool and call for the arrest of any chief under him who is involved in the illegal mining activities .
