As part of measures to ensure mining activities are regulated properly, some individuals and institutions are also calling for it banning whiles other also believes baning Small-Scale Mining will put a large chunk of the Ghanaian youth out of the job sector.
Some of these respected individuals who believe banning SSM will further worsening the situation, is the Sompahene of Ahafo Nkaseim, Nana Yaw Sarpong.
Nana Yaw Sarpong, a miner and Chief Executive Officer of Ahafo Nkaseim Mining noted that, the magnitude at which Small Scale Mining is helping the youth, it will displace majority of many Ghanaians, especially those living in the mining communities.
“I head some people are saying those are in engage in mining should stop or governmentshould ban all forms of mining”. I’m a miner, when you come to Ahafo Nkaseim its mining business that I’m doing and many youth and the entire community depends on the mining. Indicating that the mining is good and a livelihood job for the people there.
Responsible mining is a source of job creation for the youth. “If you are a chief living in the mining community and your people are complaining of lack of jobs and you can’ provide them with jobs through Small Scale Mining, what wrong did that chief committed”.
Nana Yaw Sarpong was addressing miners at the launch of Miners4 Bawumia, revealed that mining is good, but the manner in which some of them are mining is the problem. It was in this vain that, Nana Addo trained some selected individuals in the mining sector to aquire knowledge in the sector so as to engage in responsible mining and I was part of those selected persons who went and train at Tarkwa Mines.
Nana Yaw Sarpong however called on chiefs living in the mining communities to resist fiercely the decision to ban Small Scale Mining since it’s the only source of job creation and livelihood jobs for the youth in the mining communities.
