Ignore Labour Unions Strike Threat On SSM Ban-Retired Civil Servant To Gov’t
Following several calls by the various labour unions within the public sector and civil society organisations pressuring government to place a ban on all forms of small scale mining activities in the country due to the alarming rate at which most of the country’s rivers and water bodies have been polluted, a retired civil servant based in Accra , in the person of Madam Margaret Okailey Lamptey is calling on the government not to bow to the pressure mounted by the various organised labour unions and their impending intended nationwide strike which begins on the 10th October, 2024.
According to madam Margaret Okailey Lamptey, though it is true the illegal mining ( Galamsey) activities have political rivers and water bodies in some parts of the country the solution is not to ban all forms of small scale mining activities in the country because its the few people who are mostly found polluting the rivers which government through the Lands and Natural Resources ministry have implemented a roadmap with strategies to curb those in the illegal mining activities.
According to the retired Accra based civil servant the rate at which small scale mining activities has provided both direct and indirect jobs to teeming youth numbering over 3 million so place a ban on small scale mining activities will definitely results into criminal and robbery activities because over 3 million people will remain jobless which will also be a national security threat as well .
Madam Margaret Okailey Lamptey is of the view that government should replace organised labour unions with the Unemployed Graduates Association who have been at home for years without a job to earn an income if organised labour unions remain adamant on their decision to embark on a nationwide strike action which they declared in a news conference on the 1st October 2024.
The retired civil servant is also calling on the government to freeze and block salaries of all organised labour unions from the period of their strike actions.
