Preserving Ghana’s Future: Why All Political Parties Should Sign A Pact To Ban Galamsey Activities-Malik Musah
Ghana’s rich natural resources and vibrant culture are currently facing a looming environmental crisis through illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey” which is derived from the English word, gather them and sell.
This destructive practice not only devastates the environment but also threatens the livelihoods of communities and future generations.
In light of these pressing concerns, the Zone 18 Chairman of Suame Magazine (Garages), Malik Musah in an exclusive interview with the content writer of matcommedia.com, Ben-oni Barnes said, all political parties in the country must come together and commit to banning galamsey activities when in power, by signing a pact to eliminate this detrimental practice for political parties to safeguard Ghana’s environment.
Mr. Malik Musah noted that to combat the grave threat posed by galamsey, it is essential for all political parties in Ghana to unite under a common goal of eradicating this destructive practice…by signing a pact to ban galamsey activities, irrespective of which party holds power, to send a strong message of commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
Mr. Musah estimated that galamsey has ravaged our lands, polluting our waterways, destroying ecosystems, and jeopardizing the health and well-being of our people. It is time to shift the narrative and explore how the planting and cultivation of local rice can offer a viable alternative to this destructive practice.
This, according to him, will provide short-term economic gains for the youth after the fight to curb galamsey is successful.
“The fight to end galamsey is a good cause, but what will the youth do after chasing them out of the galamsey sites”? Musah queries.
Thus, local rice farming represents a beacon of hope—a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative that can not only help to mitigate the impacts of galamsey but also foster economic development, food security, and community resilience.
Hence, by promoting the cultivation of local rice varieties, we can revitalize our agricultural sector, empower local farmers, and strengthen our food security.
Malik Musah outlined key reasons why shifting from galamsey to local rice farming will transform the economy he mentioned sustainability and Economic Empowerment as factors that could protect valuable ecosystems and also create opportunities for smallholder farmers to earn a dignified livelihood and create employment opportunities for the teeming youth.
