A Small Scale Miner in the Atiwa East has suggested entrenched measures aiming at promoting safe and clean mining in the sector.
Edmund Bonsu, who has the expertise in mining averred that, the mining sector need to be tackled with the seriousness it deserves where miniers will take the mantle to ensure the safety of miners and the protection and preservation of the lands through the reclamation of mining pits.
He told our content writer, Isaac Ochem in an exclusive interview that, the past government introduced youth mining and community mining in their quest to properly regulate irregularities in the sector but the outcome results could not merit it sustainability.
The mining, he said, has created job opportunities for the youth. Hence, the government needs to facilitate viable measures to elminate the chanfans’ operations and other illegal mining activities to enhance stronger youth participation in the sector.
Edmund Bonsu underscores that Small-Scale Miners have acquired requisite documentation mandated for responsible mining and want the current government to support them properly to regulate the illegal ones where a committee can be formed to enforce the reclamation of all mining pits because they are in the sector and everything that has to do with mining activities falls in their hands…through that, the mining activities can continue with a new direction of transparency, accountability and equality.
He appealed to the president, John Dramani Mahama, to as a matter of national interest ensure that groups that are operating the SSM, are being operate under the require guidelines and plans of the laid down measures. If any of the group fails to comply with require regulatory measures, can be punished.
“Scrapping small scale mining will cause a huge problem to the youth. Hence, its necessary for government to see it sustainability”.
